In August of last year, the first images of a mysterious new project by Donald Glover, Rihanna and Atlanta director Hiro Murai filming in Cuba. At the time, no one knew what it was (a music video? A short film? A movie?). Since then, only a few details have leaked out, but the release – of what we now know to be a movie – is just around the corner. Here’s everything you need to know about Glover’s new project, Guava Island, which will debut this weekend at Coachella.
What is it exactly ?
Guava Island is a new film that Glover has developed with New Regency Film. He is set to make his Coachella debut the day before Childish Gambino’s headlining festival. As Billboard reports:
Guava Island will premiere at the Coachella Music Festival on Thursday, the day before Glover’s alter ego rap headliner Childish Gambino, in what is described as a “specially built theater for the event.” ; the film will be screened on Coachella grounds until the end of the festival.
It stars Donald Glover, Rihanna, Nonso Anozie (Game Of Thrones), and Letitia Wright (Black Panther). The film was shot over four weeks in Cuba according to Vanity Show and it is said to be a “one hour musical animated film” described as a “tropical thriller”. Deadline also described it as “an expansion of Glover’s idea of freedom”.
The film was written by Glover’s brother Stephen and directed by Hiro Murai, who has collaborated with Glover on several projects, including “This is America”. This will be Murai’s first feature film as a director.

Where can I watch it?
Part of the acquisition deal Glover has with Amazon Prime comes with a pretty sweet accessibility deal for Glover fans. Although the streaming service has exclusive rights, Guava Island will stream for free on Amazon Prime in over 200 countries for 18 hours. You can access the film from 12:01 am PT on April 13. The film will also air at 5 p.m. PT Saturday on the Twitch and Coachella live stream on YouTube.
Anything else to know?
Besides that, we don’t know much else Guava Island. The story of the film is developed from Royalty, the Glover-led collective behind Atlanta. Glover tweeted the film’s first official image ahead of Amazon Prime’s streaming announcement.
In addition to this image, Amazon released a short trailer that shows Glover getting a bag thrown over his head. According to Vanity Show, Amazon Studios director Jennifer Salke made the decision to commit to the film after receiving a four-and-a-half-minute sizzle reel from Glover that expired 30 minutes after receiving it.
So there you have it, you can have your Guava Island and not having to travel to California to watch. Gambino is expected to take to the Coachella stage on Friday at 11:25 p.m., which means your weekend plans are officially set.
